Summary File 2

Short Form Information Available in Summary File 2

Summary File 2 (SF 2) contains basic information on the U.S. population from Census 2000. It includes data on people's age, sex, and race, their family and household groups, and whether their home is owned or rented. This information is based on answers to the questions on the Census 2000 Short-Form (PDF - 424 KB) questionnaire.

There are 47 Detailed Tables in the SF 2 data product. Quick Tables and Geographic Comparison Tables based on these Detailed Tables summarize the most popular results. A full description of all the tables in SF 2 can be found in Help or in the SF 2 Technical Documentation (PDF - 4.6MB).

SF 2 has 249 Race and Ethnicity Groups

The SF 2 data product is focused on examining the results by race and ethnicity. For each of the Detailed Tables, the results can be filtered to include only the population belonging to certain race and ethnic groups. These include the following:

For a complete list of the 249 population groups, see Appendix H of the SF 2 Technical Documentation (PDF - 4.6MB).

SF 2 has Many Geographies

The SF 2 product contains data for many geographic levels. The smallest available is the census tract. The most commonly requested geographical levels for SF 2 include:

Both Detailed Tables and Quick Tables (QT) provide total population figures and are available for the 249 population groups. Geographic Comparison Tables (GCT) provide total population figures and can be repeated for nine race and Hispanic and Latino groups. Detailed Tables offer the most comprehensive subject and geographic coverage.

Data Filtered to Protect Privacy and Confidentiality

Because many of the race and ancestry groups are small, the SF 2 results have been filtered to protect the confidentiality of the responses provided. There are two "rules of 100" which apply to SF 2 tables:

For quick access to results:

  1. Select a table or map.
  2. Select a geographic area from the drop-down menu.
  3. Click 'Go'.

The table will display for the total population. Use the links at the top of the result screen to select Race or Ethnic Groups (Population Groups), other tables, and other geographic areas.
