Summary File 4 (SF 4) contains data compiled from a sample of approximately 19 million housing units (about 1 in 6 households) that received the Census 2000 Long-Form questionnaire (PDF - 627KB). It covers topics including income, ancestry, citizenship status, home values, commute time to work, occupation, education, veteran status, language ability, migration, place of birth, and many others.
There are 335 Detailed Tables available in the SF 4 data product. Quick Tables and Geographic Comparison Tables based on these Detailed Tables summarize the most popular results. A full description of all the tables in SF 4 can be found in the Help System or in the Summary File 4 Technical Documentation (PDF - 5.2MB).
The SF 4 data product is primarily focused on examining the results by race and ethnicity. For each of the Detailed Tables, the results can be filtered to include only the population belonging to certain race and ethnic groups. These include the following:
For a complete list of the 336 population groups, see Appendix H of the SF 4 Technical Documentation.
The SF 4 product contains data for many geographic levels. The smallest available is the census tract. The most commonly requested geographical levels for SF 4 include:
Both Detailed Tables and Quick Tables (QT) provide total population figures and are available for the 336 population groups. Geographic Comparison Tables (GCT) provide total population figures and can be repeated for nine race and Hispanic and Latino groups. Detailed Tables offer the most comprehensive subject and geographic coverage.
Because many of the race and ancestry groups are small, the SF 4 results have been filtered to protect the confidentiality of the responses provided. There are two rules which apply to SF 4 tables:
