Guided Search - Selecting Industry Codes

If you are searching for information on businesses or industries, you can specify the industry or industries you are interested in by selecting one or more industry codes.

There are four types:

Guided Search offers two ways to specify the industry code you want. First, you can type the name or code into the text field near the top of the Industry Codes page. Second, you can locate the code you want by selecting from the various industry code categories offered by AFF.

To add more codes to your search criteria, repeat either of the options described above.

Selecting an Industry Code by Name

If you know the name of the industry code you are looking for, type it into the entry field near the top of the screen.

As you type, FactFinder will show you codes with the same or similar name as the one you are typing. You can choose one of the suggested codes, or continue to type until the one you want appears.

When you select an industry code, FactFinder adds it to Your Selections as one of your search criteria. FactFinder then searches for data products that match all of the criteria shown in Your Selections, and according to the Guided Search option you have chosen. The total number of data products found is shown at the bottom of Your Selections.

If you want to remove an industry code from Your Selections, click the blue "X" next to the one you want to remove.

Selecting an Industry Code by Type

You can browse the lists of available industry codes by selecting one of the categories shown in the Code Type list box. Selecting one of the categories will produce a list of codes in that category in the table below the list box.

The category you selected is shown at the top of the table. To browse another category, remove the selected category by pressing the blue "X", and choose again from the Code Type box.

Some categories have subcategories, and those subcategories are available for selection in the same dropdown list area after you select the primary category.

No Industry Codes Available

Selection of industry codes may not be possible because of selections you have made on other steps of Guided Search. If you have selected a topic or geography (or combination of topics and geographies) on another Guided Search step that eliminates data products that contain industry codes, then industry code selection is not available.

To make selection of industry codes possible, you must remove one or more criteria from Your Selections so that products that contain industry codes are available.
